S837 - DfT Consultation on Making Britain's Roads the Safest in the World

Consultation on “Making Britain’s roads the safest in the world”: IET comments to the Department for Transport.

It is right to define a long-term strategy, but it is equally important to review it regularly in order to be aware of, and to be able to respond to, intermediate technological enhancements and developments. New low-carbon vehicles may have different safety features and performance parameters, and there may be societal changes which influence accident rates. A comprehensive road safety strategy is built on education, engineering and enforcement. Consideration should be given to the technological and policy solutions to persuade people not to speed. There also needs to be recognition that many tools are only effective for a while.
