Interim report on Digital Britain: IET comments to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).
The IET very much welcomes the report and strongly supports its overall aims. Britain’s (and the world’s) future is indeed digital and, notwithstanding the dramatic progress made in the last 30 years, ICT remains a revolution less than half completed. The report could win public support by suggesting much more ambitious targets for the services available to most users in the medium term. This could bring huge benefits for Britain’s content industries. It is recommended that more emphasis is put on the international nature of the digital broadband revolution, both from a compatibility and competitiveness standpoint and as an opportunity for Britain to excel. It is worth making it clear that these initial reports are the first stages in a continuing process to develop and maintain Britain’s competitive position in a digital converged world.
