Consultation on “Towards carbon capture and storage”: IET comments to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).
The IET’s response concentrates on the issues concerned with making power stations carbon capture-ready and incentives to provide electricity generation by the cleanest means. The UK government is already providing global leadership through its support of the UK carbon capture and storage (CCS) competition and through its support of joint research in China and elsewhere. It is important that this is sustained. Further promotion of carbon pricing at European Union level and of technological developments should continue. More work should be done to develop appropriate regulatory arrangements to facilitate carbon dioxide (CO2) transport and storage, and to enable investment in this area at the appropriate time.
