S1003 - GCSEs, AS and A levels: new subjects to be taught in 2016

Description

GCSEs, AS and A levels: new subjects to be taught in 2016: IET comments to the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual)

Abstract

New GCSEs, A levels and AS qualifications are being introduced in England. The new qualifications are being introduced in three phases, with the first new qualifications being taught from September 2015. The consultation covers some of the qualifications that will be taught from September 2016 including Design and technology.

The IET commented on the significance of the non-exam element of assessment in relation to the exam element. The IET agreed that there should not be a tiered approach to assessment and agreed with the proposed assessment objectives and weightings. Some additional feedback included highlighting concerns over the lack of guidance about the nature of the non-examined assessment and suggesting Awarding Organisations should be given much clearer guidance, the broad knowledge and understanding should be assessed independently of the ‘area of interest’ through a formal examination component and Awarding Organisations should be required to adopt an approach to assessment that takes into account the practical nature of this subject.
