Jon is Technology Director for BP’s automotive lubricant business, with global responsibility for product development across the BP brands including Castrol.
Previously, Jon spent 9 years with QinetiQ leading up to and beyond IPO. He successfully led and grew the Signal & Information Processing Group, a Medical Technology start up and the frontier physics Optronics Division. He then line managed the 500 technologists across Information Security, before becoming Director of Business Strategy and Technology Management for QinetiQ’s Technology Solutions Group. This role brought together responsibility for strategy, marketing planning and the former Chief Technology Office.
Prior to this, Jon spent 11 years with ICI in a variety of technology management, strategic planning, marketing, and global business management roles, including stints in the Netherlands, Spain & Singapore. As part of ICI’s planning group in the mid ‘90s he was closely involved in planning & execution of the M&A activity that transformed the company from a commodity to a speciality chemical player. Earlier still, he worked with Schlumberger Cambridge Research for 4 years while completing his doctorate.
Jon holds a BSc in physics and mathematics from St Andrews, a PhD in electronic & chemical engineering from UMIST, and undertook the advanced industrial marketing programme at INSEAD. He is a Fellow of the IET, and a former media fellow for the RAEng for whom he undertook a secondment to raise the profile of engineering at the BBC. He has been a representative on a number of groups including the CBI IST committee, the Birmingham Science City Board, as well as being an active STEM ambassador.
