Dr Mike Short CBE FBCS FCIPS FRGS MIET RTS

Mike’s career spans 34 years in Electronics and Telecommunications, with the last 21 years in Mobile Communications. He was appointed Contracts Director of Cellnet in 1989 dealing with major infra-structure investments and UK interconnect agreements. In 1993 the focus moved to establishing Cellnet’s GSM Service and International Roaming Agreements, helped establish UK cross operator text messaging and in 1998 to a pioneering roles on 3G Mobile.

He was elected Chairman of the global GSM Association for 1995/96 and served on their Executive Board for 5 years. He was a Board member of the WAP Forum and a founder board Member of Open Mobile Alliance. He is also a board member of the UK Council for Child internet safety (UK CCIS), and has been active on the Home Office Internet Task force , Security, Phonepayplus and Ofcom Spectrum advisory boards.

Mike has chaired the Mobile Data Association (MDA) since 1998, leading the Association as spokesperson and recently taken on the MDA role of Honorary President.

He was appointed VP Technology for O2 GROUP in 2000, Visiting Professor at Surrey University in 2003, and to the Boards of Coventry University / Ravensbourne college respectively in 2006 and `08. He is also a Visiting professor at the Universities of Lancaster and De Montfort , and was awarded an honorary doctorate in July 2008 by the University of Staffordshire. He is a Fellow of IET/BCS/CIPS/RGS and a Member of the Royal Television Society.

Mike’s focus today is on Mobile data solutions , including Health and Transport telematics, environmental measurement and mobile learning , with a strong interface to relevant Group Research and Development.
