The new President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) will use his year-long term of office to champion how innovation and customers will become ‘change-makers’ in the decarbonisation of the energy system with renewables, smart homes, energy storage and electric vehicles playing a fundamental role.
Nick Winser, Chair of the Energy Systems Catapult, became the 147th President of the IET on 1 October 2017 and held his first official engagement, the President’s Address, on Thursday 5 October 2017. During his speech, he highlighted the exciting role these changes will bring for engineers in order to meet industry needs for fast innovation across new products and services, infrastructure investment and integration of a complex and fast-moving energy system.
Nick said: “With the widespread deployment of renewable energy technologies, massive commercial availability of electric cars and smart homes, energy customers will become change-makers and their voice is now more prominent than ever in shaping the energy market, products and services available.
“During my term as IET President, I will champion engineers and technologists as our greatest innovators and the diversity of skills needed within the profession to drive forward this change, in order to meet the needs of society.
“It is also important to continue the IET’s work in supporting and inspiring the next generation of engineering talent, who will play a fundamental role in shaping our future.”
Nick is currently chair of the Energy Systems Catapult and Multiple Sclerosis Society and is a Non-Executive Director on the board of Kier Group. He has extensive experience in the energy sector across international markets, most notably as a board member and the UK CEO of National Grid (2003-2015).
The IET President’s inaugural address, ‘The real future of energy – will the customer ever be king’, is available to view on IET TV.
Nick Winser succeeds Professor Jeremy Watson CBE as President of the IET for 2017/18.
