IET agrees President-elect

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has selected Professor William Webb FREng BEng MBA PhD CEng FIET to become its President from 1 October 2014.  The decision was taken by the Board of Trustees at its meeting on 7 October 2013.

Professor William Webb is currently a Deputy President of the IET.  During his previous terms as a Trustee he chaired each of the IET’s Main Boards and he undertaken extensive voluntary activity across the Institution.

William  is CEO of the Weightless SIG, the standards body developing a new global machine-to-machine technology.  He was one of the founding directors of Neul, a company developing machine-to-machine technologies and networks, which was formed at the start of 2011.  He was previously a Director at Ofcom where he managed a team providing technical advice and performing research across all areas of Ofcom’s regulatory remit.  He also led major reviews conducted by Ofcom including the Spectrum Framework Review, the development of Spectrum Usage Rights and Cognitive or White Space Policy.  Professor Webb has published 12 books, over 100 papers, and 18 patents.  He is a Visiting Professor at Surrey University and a member of Ofcom’s Spectrum Advisory Board.

IET Deputy President Ms Naomi Climer asked the Board of Trustees to defer consideration of her candidacy for one year, in favour of Professor Webb, to accommodate her business commitments in the USA.  The Trustees approved this and agreed to extend her term as Trustee by one year by appointment to fill the casual vacancy arising from Professor Webb’s appointment.
