Cyber Security and the built environment

Explaining the cyber security issues affecting the design, construction and operation of intelligent buildings

The built environment is becoming increasingly integrated in response to pressures to reduce the impact on the natural environment and people’s expectations in an increasingly networked world.  In response to these pressures solutions are being developed such as smart cities, intelligent transport, smart homes and the smart grid. At the heart of these developments are increasingly intelligent buildings, involving the convergence of a wide variety of IT based systems. This convergence includes the use of common technologies and inter-connection and integration of systems. These developments create significant issues from a resilience and security perspective.

The IET is working with a stakeholder group to development briefing and guidance material to help explain the cyber security issues affecting the design, construction and operation of intelligent buildings. Based on this work, two documents are currently available for download from the IET’s website:

  • An insight document, providing a high-level briefing aimed at senior managers
  • A technical briefing document providing an overview of the key resilience and cyber security issues. The document includes references to relevant publicly available guidance or standards addressing specific risks.

Work is currently underway to develop a more detailed document providing information on good practice.
