To be eligible for student membership you must either be studying for an undergraduate level qualification, or a post-graduate qualification on a full-time basis in either an engineering or technology* subject. Applicants on Graduate Training Schemes are considered as being in full-time employment and so are not entitled to student membership.
Once your studies are complete, you can transfer or upgrade your membership to gain designatory letters without the need to provide supporter details as long as you remain in continuous membership.

If you are a member of the IET and are studying for further qualifications you may wish to transfer your membership back to the student category to take advantage of the student membership rate.
To be eligible to transfer your membership to student you must either be studying for an undergraduate level qualification, or a post-graduate qualification on a full-time basis in either an engineering or technology* subject. If you have professional registration with the Engineering Council at any level, or are studying a post-graduate qualification on a part-time basis you are unfortunately unable to transfer your membership back to student and would be claim our reduced rates if eligible.
Please note that you will lose your right to use any designatory letters you have gained through the IET e.g. MIET if you transfer your membership to student
