Chartered Manager for CEng and IEng members

Chartered Manager is the most prestigious status that can be achieved in the managerial profession.

Awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) [new window], it is recognised throughout the public and private sectors and across all management disciplines.

The IET has partnered with CMI to offer IET members a route to qualify as a Chartered Manager. If you're an IET member and a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and have five years or more management experience, you are eligible for CMI’s qualified route to becoming a Chartered Manager.

If you would like to find out more, please view the Chartered Manager webinar [new window] which took place on Tuesday 3rd June.

Why become a Chartered Manager?

  • It raises your profile, providing a professional status and endorsement of your management credentials
  • Enhances your employability, evidencing your transferable managerial skills
  • Increases your confidence, informing your decision-making through a professional code of conduct.

CMgr is the ideal partner to CEng and IEng, endorsing your managerial credentials as well as your technical and professional expertise.

How will my employer benefit?

Chartered Managers are a great investment. Employers can rely on them to be consistent in everything they do: performing to a high standard; playing a key part in delivering organisational objectives; putting theory into practice and driving organisations forward.

Chartered Managers can also help to win business, by providing quality assurance to potential clients when tendering bids.

How to become a Chartered Manager

The application and assessment process is very straightforward:

  1. Complete a brief online application, choose your preferred assessment method (written or professional discussion) and pay the application fee by credit or debit card.
  2. CMI will then send you an assessment form and assign an assessor
  3. Complete the assessment form, with advice from your CMI assessor
  4. Complete a formal interview by telephone
  5. CMI will corroborate your evidence with your line manager/colleague and then confirm your result

You have 12 months to complete the assessment process but could become a Chartered Manager in as little as six weeks.

If you are not registered as CEng or IEng and still wish to become a Chartered Manager, the standard route is available through the CMI [new window].
