General

What is CITP?

Chartered IT Professional (CITP) is a professional status held by an individual following assessment by qualified peers. It is identified by the post-nominal letters ‘CITP’.

Who owns CITP?

BCS, The Chartered Institution for IT owns the CITP standard.

Who can award CITP?

Professional membership bodies apply to the BCS for a licence that enables them to award CITP to their eligible members. The IET is one of the membership bodies licensed to award CITP.

What recognition does CITP provide to an individual?

CITP is increasing in national and international recognition as the benchmark of excellence for IT professionals. It provides evidence of an individual’s commitment to their profession and endorsement of their experience and knowledge.

What framework is used for assessing competence for the CITP award?

The CITP standard is aligned to Level 5 of the Skills for the Information Age (SFIA) framework.

Please note that pre-application advice should not include any assessment questions eg CV reviewing or ascertaining what SFIA level you may be working at as this could conflict with the formal assessment process.

Applying for CITP via the IET

What category of IET membership do I need to hold before I can apply for CITP?

Either of these three categories must be held:

  • Technician Member (TMIET);
  • Member (MIET);
  • Fellow (FIET).

Can students, apprentices or associate members of the IET apply for CITP?

No. A student, apprentice or associate member would need to apply to upgrade their IET membership to TMIET, MIET or FIET prior to making an application for CITP. 

I hold current IET and BCS membership.  Which is the most beneficial CITP application route for me?

This must be a personal preference and your choice. To help you to make the most relevant selection to suit you, it is suggested that you review the products/services from each organisation to help in your decision.

If I was awarded CITP status before 2009 can I transfer my CITP status to the IET?

No. CITP registrants who were awarded before 2009 would need to apply, via the IET, for the latest CITP standard with the Certificate of Current Competence (CoCC).

Can I apply for CITP via the IET if I was previously a BCS member?

Yes, but all back fees owed to the BCS relating to BCS membership and all CITP fees must be paid in full before the IET can accept your application. You will be asked to agree to IET terms and conditions confirming that back fees have already been paid to the BCS before applying for CITP via the IET.

Can I apply for CITP, via the IET, using a paper application instead of online via the IET web site.

No. CITP application, via the IET, is only available online via the IET CITP web page.

Can I save a part completed CITP application?

Yes. To return to the saved application and continue you will need to go to the IET CITP web page.

Who can support my application for CITP?

A supporter can be your employer, a client, or a colleague (although not a subordinate), and must be sufficiently familiar with your work over three of the last five years to have a reliable opinion of your competence. Note: University/College tutors and family members will not be accepted as supporters. 

Please ensure that your supporters are informed that their details will be supplied as part of your application for CITP and that these details will be shared with BCS and IET as part of the application process. Supporters details will be stored on the BCS database as part of the audit requirements.

Can I get a refund if I change my mind once I’ve submitted my CITP application online, via the IET route?

No. Refunds are not available at any stage of the CITP application process however this doesn’t affect your Statutory Rights.

As an IET Member, based in a non UK location, can I pay for my CITP application fee at my local IET offices?

No. The CITP application is online and this also includes submission of the CITP application fee online. IET local offices, outside the UK, are not able to accept payments from IET members for the CITP application fee. Online payment is made by credit or debit card directly to the BCS. The CITP application fee includes VAT at the current 20 per cent rate.

Does the IET assess my CITP application?

No. The IET have signed a Service Assessment agreement with BCS to enable BCS to manage the assessment and processing of applications on behalf of the IET for its members.

How do I check the status of my CITP application in progress?

On receipt of your application, BCS will provide you with a login so you can check the status of your application online. You’ll also receive regular email communications notifying you of the progress of your application.

What arrangements are there in place for people with disabilities to undertake the CITP application process?

Stage 1 and 3 of the CITP application are online. Stage 2 involves physically attending an approved test centre to sit the Breadth of Knowledge (BoK) test. Candidates who require specific arrangements to attend should contact the BCS Customer Service team who can assist with the relevant arrangements, by contacting:

How many chances do I get to sit the Breadth of Knowledge (BoK) test at the approved test centre?

Applicants have six months in which to book, take and if necessary, re-sit the BoK test. Refunds are not available at any stage of the CITP application.

Do I have to pay to sit the second Breadth of Knowledge (BoK) test at the approved test centre?

No, the re-sit is included in the assessment fee.

Can I organise another re-sit of the Breadth of Knowledge (BoK) test at the approved test centre if I couldn’t make it to the second re-sit?

Yes, if you have cancelled your re-sit within the required timescales.

Failure to attend either the first BoK test or BoK re-sit are both counted and additional re-sits are not available. 

How is the Skills Assessment  Interview conducted at Stage 3 of the CITP application process?

The Skills Assessment Interview is carried out online using video conferencing software and is attended by two assessors (one in the chosen specialism of the applicant).

Typically, the interview duration is 45 minutes with 10 minutes for the presentation. A copy of your presentation must be submitted to BCS at least seven days prior to the interview date.

The assessors complete an interview report which is passed to BCS who then confirm the result to the IET registration team.

The IET registration team notify the IET member of the successful award. BCS notify the IET member of unsuccessful results which includes feedback.

Certificate of Current Competence (CoCC)

When do I receive my CITP Certificate of Current Competence (CoCC)?

Once the IET registration team have notified you that your CITP application is successful, you will be asked to submit payment for the CITP first registration fee by telephoning the IET registration team. Payment may be made by credit or debit card. 

After payment is received, the CITP CoCC will be posted to you from the IET. The CoCC is valid for five years.

If I lose or damage my CITP Certificate of Current Competence can I apply for a replacement from the IET?

Yes. You may contact the IET registration team to request a replacement and submit the relevant fee – detailed on the IET professional registration fees page.

Transferring my CITP Certificate of Current Competence (CoCC) to the IET

How can I transfer my CITP status with Certificate of Current Competence to the IET?

Transfer requests are subject to you having a minimum of two compete years remaining on your CoCC. Full details of the transfer request process via the IET are detailed on the IET CITP Transfer web page.

A transfer fee is payable to the IET – full details of fees can be found on the IET professional registration fees page.

If my CITP transfer is accepted by the IET – how do I pay my CITP annual renewal fee?

Once the IET confirm acceptance of a CITP transfer request, the CITP annual renewal fee is added to your IET annual membership subscription.

If my CITP transfer is accepted by the IET, is another CITP Certificate of Current Competence issued?

Yes. When the IET registration team confirm acceptance of a CITP transfer request, you will receive details regarding the transfer fee and transfer certificate fee. Fees may be paid by credit or debit card by contacting the IET registration team:
