Graham Tubbs and his wife, Kathleen.
South Wales engineering students invited to apply for new IET scholarship.
The IET has launched a brand new scholarship in the South Wales area.
The IET Tubbs Family Blaenau Gwent Scholarship, worth £3,000 per year, has been made possible as a result of a generous donation by an IET member of more than 50 years, Graham Tubbs, and his wife, Kathleen.
The new scholarship is designed to help students with university costs, particularly for those who might not otherwise have been able to attend university or pursue a career in engineering. The scholarship, created by Graham and Kathleen, will involve the IET and Cardiff University working closely together. Students from the area who plan to start an IET accredited university course at Cardiff will be eligible to apply for this award.
Graham, originally from South Wales, now lives in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. He said: “It is now more than 50 years since I walked into the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough to begin my student apprenticeship.
“I’ve been very fortunate to be able to enjoy a long and rewarding engineering career which was built upon my upbringing and education in the UK.
“Through this scholarship we want to give back to an area of the country that meant a lot to me as a boy, by opening the gates of opportunity to candidates from there to enter the wonderful world of engineering. Hopefully from this career launching pad they will be equipped to address future challenges.”
IET President Barry Brooks said: “We are delighted to launch this new scholarship which has only been made possible by the generosity of long time IET member Graham Tubbs.
“His generosity will directly help to encourage more young people to study engineering at university and, hopefully, to go on and enjoy a rewarding and exciting career in engineering, just like Mr Tubbs has done.”
In 2013, the IET provided over £1 million in awards, prizes and scholarships, to celebrate engineering excellence and inspire the next generation of engineers and technicians.
