An update on the IET’s work with HS2.
The IET has been at the forefront of expert opinion on the subject of the UK’s High Speed Two (HS2) rail network, and will now host high speed rail knowledge dissemination seminars across the country.
High speed rail experts from Europe and the USA will come together in London on 12 September to share their experiences and discuss the HS2 project. Similar events are due to take place in Birmingham in December, and in Manchester, Leeds, the East Midlands and Scotland or the north east in 2014.
These events, organised by the IET, Parsons Brinckerhoff and HS2 Ltd, will provide a forum for the railway industry and its many stakeholders to discuss international best practice in high speed rail and the latest technical solutions, challenges and innovations being developed for HS2.
The first event in this programme is a full day technical seminar, High Speed Rail - Vision into Reality, with high level presentations from a number of senior HS2 specialists and industry experts from around the world.
Peter Sheppard, chair of the IET Transport Sector, said: “The HS2 project is not just a project to reduce the ever increasing pressure on the conventional West Coast Main Line, nor is it just a project to reduce journey times to Birmingham, Manchester or Leeds.
“It is the first small step of a long term systems engineering project that will utilise leading edge technology in all disciplines to provide the UK with a safe and reliable high speed train service. It will challenge the airlines and road users in their selection of travel mode and can be seen as a first step in integrating a new national transport system with existing hubs to bring about benefits to all users.”
The IET’s Transport Policy Panel has contributed significantly to the HS2 debate, through policy submissions to government and expert comment in the media.
As part of the Engineering the Future alliance, the IET and the Royal Academy of Engineering submitted a response to the UK Government’s consultation on High Speed Rail. The IET has also produced a video, HS2: What are the facts?, in conjunction with Politics.co.uk.
