IET joins with other institutions to promote diversity.

The IET, along with other Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) have signed the Diversity in Engineering concordat to pledge commitment to equality within the profession.

The one-page document outlines three objectives that all Institutions involved must adhere to. These are: to communicate commitment to equality and inclusion principles, to monitor and measure progress and to increase diversity amongst those in professional membership and registration.

The signing took place on May 7 at the Royal Academy of Engineering. Other signatories included the Engineering Council, Royal Academy of Engineering, Institution of Chemical Engineers, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institute of Physics, Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, Institution of Civil Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society.

A resource guide has also been developed to support PEIs working towards the concordat and other organisations who wish to increase diversity.

Anne Fitzsimmons, of the IET Women’s Network, said: “We are very pleased to support this initiative. The IET Women’s Network goes from strength to strength in not only supporting our female members but in encouraging young women to consider engineering as a career.”

There are a number of elements that make up the Women’s Network, with its MyCommunity serving as the heart of the network. This platform enables members and non-members to maintain a central point of professional contact, globally, with like-minded individuals. Members of the network can share stories, information, create and contribute to discussions and highlight the achievements of others.

All signatories will be encouraging all of the 36 PEIs to sign-up to the concordat in due course. To find out more about the concordat and resource guide, visit http://www.raeng.org.uk/about/diversity/resources/eng_div_concordat.htm

In the run up to the deadline for the IET's Young Woman Engineer of the Year awards, we will be hosting a live webcast with past and present YWE winners. You will be able to ask questions on all topics related to women in engineering. Please see the MyVoice page for more details.
