The Institution's most successful year ever for media coverage.
The IET has just released a report on its media coverage in 2012, with some great results.
Since 2010, the number of times the Institution has appeared in national and regional media has continued to rise, positioning the Institution as a leading provider of independent, authoritative comment on the impacts of engineering and technology on society.
The frequency with which the IET has featured in the media has almost tripled, with 1588 instances in 2010, 2431 instances in 2011 and 4048 instances in 2012.
Last year, IET spokespeople appeared on news channels such as Sky News, BBC News and Al Jazeera English, commenting on issues as diverse as the UK nuclear industry, power cuts in India and skills shortages in the UK.
The IET’s strong presence in UK national newspapers has continued with an improved presence in tabloid titles such as The Sun and Daily Mail. Plus, of course, a continuing presence in all the main broadsheets.
On the radio, IET experts were interviewed on BBC Radio 4 programmes Today and PM and on BBC Radio 2’s Drivetime show. Many independent radio stations also covered IET news and used IET volunteers to get expert insight into engineering and technology issues.
In India and China, media coverage has been achieved in titles including the New Indian Express, The Times of India, Hindu Business Line, China Daily, Economic Daily, and China Science Daily. This has really helped to raise the profile of the IET in those countries among engineers and the general public.
Journalists are increasingly turning to the IET for expert commentary and opinions in recognition of the fact that IET views are independent and evidence-based.
The increased media coverage in the UK is having a positive impact on how widely the IET brand is known. According to an annual independent poll conducted by Ipsos Mori, the percentage of the UK public who recognise the IET brand name has risen from 39 per cent to 41 per cent since last year. The poll also shows that more people had heard about the IET through the media rather than any other source.
IET president Professor Andy Hopper said: “The media presence of the IET has much improved over the last few years. We are really pleased that the IET brand is becoming well-known and that journalists are turning to us as a trusted source of engineering intelligence in many different areas."
