Latest news from the IET’s five sector teams.

The IET focuses on five sectors: Built Environment, Design & Production, Energy, Information & Communications, and Transport.

Over the past few months, the sector teams have been involved in a number of projects that have generated media coverage and opportunities for the IET.

British Business Embassy days

The IET’s sectors collaborated with the UK Trade & Investment to showcase the British Business Embassy days held during the London 2012 Olympic Games. These events formed the centrepiece of the international business legacy of the Games, and were attended by government ministers, business leaders and policy makers from around the world.

IET.tv filmed 96 presentations from the 17 days of business summits that took place at Lancaster House, showcasing engineering, technology and innovation related to the five IET sectors.

USE Efficiency summer school

Also during the Games, the IET, led by the Built Environment sector, worked in partnership with Universities and Students for Energy Efficiency (USE Eff) and the Italian Ministry for the Environment to hold a USE Eff summer school in the UK. The summer school will continue on an annual basis, involving the brightest architectural and engineering university students from across the EU.

Thought leadership

As part of the IET thought leadership programme, sector insights on The future roll-out of low carbon vehicles in the UK and Intelligent buildings: understanding and managing the security risks have been produced by the Transport and Information & Communications sectors respectively. More insights are in the pipeline to be produced by the end of the year.

Sector events

Following the success of the Electric Vehicles lecture series in 2011, the Transport sector has continued these events across the UK this year. The most recent lecture was held in the Midlands, focusing on the societal impacts of electric vehicle adoption. Over 90 people attended, with 80 per cent from industry, to hear speakers from Alstom Grid, Zytek Automotive and Cenex, the Delivery Agency for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. More events are planned for Dublin and Paris later on in 2012.

Case studies

Two case studies in the Energy and Transport sectors have been produced, involving Ashwoods Automotive and UK Power Networks - shortlisted finalists from the IET’s 2011 Innovation Awards. The case studies outline the organisations’ innovations and how they are both making use of the IET’s essential engineering intelligence and knowledge network in their relevant sectors.

Out and about

In September, the IET will was represented at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, where IET.tv will  filmed the keynote presentations and the 2012 Best of IET and IBC journal was presented.

The Transport sector will also have a presence at the Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress in Vienna, at the end of this month, as well as the Olympic Delivery Authority’s upcoming Transport Olympic Legacy conference.
