Latest news on the proposed refurbishment of the IET’s London venue.

As previously reported on Member News online, the IET is currently undertaking a feasibility study into a comprehensive refurbishment of its London venue, IET London: Savoy Place.

Latest news

At its meeting early this month, the IET Board of Trustees decided that the feasibility study should proceed to the next design stage (Stage E+).

The project is currently in Stage D of the RIBA process and at the end of November 2012 a ‘design freeze’ will come into effect on certain aspects of the project to enable more cost certainty going forward

Next steps

In early 2013 the Board of Trustees will consider and decide on whether the project can be fully approved to move onto construction phases. If approval is given then a series of ‘decant’ procedures for the building will commence.

A construction programme has been identified to show how the tendering, strip-out and construction would then affect the use of the building between August 2013 and July 2015.

Potential temporary co-location with the IMechE at One Birdcage Walk

If the project does proceed, the IET will require a temporary headquarters for its member facilities, events, library and meetings between mid-2013 and mid-2015.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has offered to provide this home for the IET in One Birdcage Walk, the IMechE headquarters in central Westminster. This would enable the IET to retain a London presence and maintain its level of service to IET members.

More information

A special web area has been set up for the Savoy Place upgrade project. In this area, IET members can learn more about the many benefits the project will provide, take a look at the proposed floor plans and design concepts, and then submit comments, questions, feedback or ideas.

Frequently asked question (FAQ) documents are also available for the overall project and the potential temporary co-location with the IMechE.
