With support from the Engineering Council, the IET and five other engineering institutions recently signed a partnership agreement with the global defence, security and aerospace company BAE Systems.

Under the agreement, the IET will support BAE Systems employees to gain professional registration.

BAE Systems has approximately 107,000 employees worldwide, and the company has identified more than 18,000 engineers who they wish to progress towards professional registration.

IET Registration & Standards Manager Mike Bridgefoot said: “We have been working with BAE Systems on professional registration for their engineers and technicians for many years. It is great to hear that professional registration is now top of the agenda for the company globally. As well as increasing the professionalism of the engineers and technicians in the company, we expect that this agreement will help us to add to our CEng, IEng and EngTech numbers in the coming years.”

Nigel Whitehead, Group Managing Director at BAE Systems, said: "BAE Systems is one of the largest employers of skilled engineers in the UK and we are committed to providing a clear framework for career development and training which leads towards professional registration for our people. The engineering institutions are vital in helping us do this and I am delighted that we are able to work collaboratively on such a comprehensive skills accreditation programme."

The five other institutions involved in the agreement are:

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers
The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology
The Institute of Physics
The Royal Institution of Naval Architects
The Royal Aeronautical Society
