Designatory letters

The IET awards designatory letters to its members (TMIET and MIET), Fellows (FIET) and Honorary Fellows (HonFIET). Professional registration

Enhance your career prospects by demonstrating your commitment and professionalism with these peer-assessed and internationally recognised professional engineering qualifications. The IET is licensed by the Engineering Council to assess applicants and award the following titles:

• Chartered Engineer (CEng);
• Incorporated Engineer (IEng);

Awards

City and Guilds Senior Awards

The IET has teamed up with the City and Guilds of London Institute to offer IET members direct access to the City and Guilds senior awards scheme. Having worked closely with the Engineering Council in mapping their awards against the levels for professional registration City and Guilds are able to admit IET members to the appropriate senior award without further assessment.

Books

Members are entitled to a 35 per cent discount on books published by the IET (Note: discount applies to one copy per title only). This includes the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) which is the national standard in the UK and many other countries for the safety of electrical installations for buildings.

The IET publishes a range of member magazines that are produced to the highest editorial standards by a team of specialist editors who are leading experts in their fields. The magazines include:

IET Digital Library

Members can access the abstracts of more than 90,000 technical papers from all journals, magazines, conference publications and seminar digests through the IET Digital Library, free of charge. Members can also access the full text of articles (in PDF format) by purchasing an additional subscription and individual papers may be purchased by pay-per-view. Highly cited journals such as Electronic Letters are available alongside the entire IET research journal suite.

IET Library and Archives

Our library has a world-class collection of digital and printed resources on all areas of engineering and technology. Members have access to over 65,000 books and 3,000 journals. Our archive collects and preserves the records of the IET since its foundation in 1871.

Inspec

Inspec is one of the world's largest and most wide ranging bibliographic databases for scientific and technical research containing over 11 million scientific and technical papers. Members of the IET can access this online research tool at highly discounted fees.

Events

Members enjoy discounted rates of up to 20 per cent for bookings at over 1,500 leading conferences, seminars and lectures each year. Held all over the world, these events cover all aspects of engineering and technology.

Electrical courses

The IET runs a comprehensive range of electrical training courses with member and early booking discounts available.

Local Networks (LNs)

With over 100 Local Networks around the world, there is a community of IET members near you which provide professional networking opportunities. The level of involvement is up to you from attending an event or giving a talk, to joining the Local Network committee. No matter the amount of time you can commit, your Local Network committee would be delighted to hear from you.

Technical and Professional Networks (TPNs)

The IET host over 30 TPNs which enable engineering and technology professionals, academics and students to come together to discuss research and innovation in their sectors.You can participate in a number of ways - using the online discussion forums, attending a TPN organised event or by joining a TPN committee.

Volunteering

IET members can get involved with a broad range of volunteering opportunities from being a mentor or qualification assessor, to organising meeting and events or helping author new publications. Volunteering will give you great personal satisfaction whilst being an enjoyable and rewarding experience which enhances both your professional and personal development.

Shaping the future

The IET is a voice for the profession and represents the view of its members on a wide range of professional and technological issues. During the course of a year, the IET responds to around 30 consultations from Parliament, Government, the European Union and other agencies. The responses submitted include contributions from our members so you really do have a means to offer your opinion and help us shape the future.

Developing the next generation of engineers and technicians

The IET accredits almost 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate courses around the world as well as providing curriculum support for teachers of science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses (STEM). Our Education 5-19 team works closely with a number of educational partners and contributes funding to their activities. Our programmes, which include IET Faraday, are supported by a network of Schools Liaison Officers (IET members) who work with schools to excite pupils about STEM subjects.

As a member, you have access to the facilities at Savoy Place, our London venue. You can visit the IET Library, relax in the members' lounge or use the computer suite and refreshments are available throughout the day. You can also hire our prestigious conference facilities at:

Certificates

Members of the IET who are entitled to use designatory letters can apply for a certificate. This certifies their status of membership and their Engineering Council professional registration (if applicable).

IET Diary

IET email alias

The IET offers all members a personal email alias service in which you can register or instantly update your own unique, personalised email address. The email alias ending in @theiet.org, provides a professional email address for your business contacts.
