Which membership category is right for you?
- Students and apprentices are usually individuals working towards a career in science, engineering and technology whether at university or on an apprenticeship scheme. Membership will give you access to the IET community and advice on continued professional development;
- Associates are either working in a related field or simply have a passion for engineering and technology. By joining as an associate you will have access to all the IET’s products and services. Many associates also qualify to become a member later in their career;
- Members have developed a standard of knowledge and understanding and are engaged in an activity relevant to the interests of the IET. Members are able to use the designatory letters MIET or TIMET;
- Fellows are highly acclaimed individuals who have demonstrated sustained achievement within their profession. Once at this stage, the IET may invite you to join as a Fellow. Fellows use the prestigious FIET designatory letters.
Professional Registration
The Engineering Council (UK) licenses the Institution of Engineering and Technology to assess applicants on its behalf
- Chartered Engineers (CEng) are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills. They are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They may develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient production techniques and marketing and construction concepts, and pioneer new engineering services and management methods;
- Incorporated Engineers (IEng) are engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills. They are characterised by their ability to act as exponents of today's technology through creativity and innovation. To this end, they maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation;
- Engineering Technicians (EngTech) are involved in applying proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems and carry supervisory or technical responsibility. Professional engineering technicians carry many responsibilities. They contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, operation or maintenance of products and services and are required to apply safe systems of work;
- ICT Technicians (ICTTech) work in a range of jobs that involve the support or facilitation of others to use ICT equipment and applications. They are required to use ICT knowledge and understanding when applying technical and practical skills and contribute to the design, development, testing, commissioning, installation, operation, migration or maintenance of ICT products, processes, systems or services. ICT Technicians accept personal responsibility and use effective communication and interpersonal skills. By registering, they make a personal commitment to a code of professional conduct; recognising obligations to the public, the profession and the environment.
