Confidentiality in the IET rules of conduct

19. Members shall not without proper authority disclose any confidential information concerning the business of their employer or any past employer.

This rule leaves two crucial questions open. Firstly, what constitutes the "proper authority"? Secondly, what counts as "confidential information"? 

Our case study examines these issues in some depth, but each example of confidential information will be different. You may have to exercise individual judgement in these cases, but first it is vital that you make sure that you are aware of all relevant legal and contractual requirements.
