This case study will allow you to learn more about the issue of professional competence. This page provides a brief introduction to the case study.
Over the following pages, you will read a fictionalised account of a controversial use of Information Technology. You will be asked to reflect on the boundaries of an engineer’s professional competence, and what to do when a situation tests those boundaries. You will be provided with a basic account of the situation, as well as descriptions of the viewpoints of some of the important stakeholders. All the information, people and companies are fictional, but the situation described is based on real-life events.
This case study has been structured so that the choices you make affect the information that is provided to you. For that reason, please think carefully about your decisions, and answer as honestly as possible. It is also advisable that you do not use the ‘back’ button on your browser – you will have the opportunity to return to the beginning and complete the case-study as many times as you wish.
