Finding work experience
There are a number of ways to identify opportunities to gain vital work experience.
Depending on the type of work experience you are looking for, there are a number of ways that you can find these opportunities.
- If you are undertaking a sandwich year, your university will often have a placements office that will assist you in finding a position. Even if you are not taking a sandwich degree, they may still have the relevant contacts to help you find a placement;
- Your university or college careers office may be able to assist you in making contact with companies or schemes which offer work experience;
- If you are looking for general employment opportunities you may wish to sign up with a job agency or look in your local paper for part-time opportunities while you study. The IET also has a job search for technical and graduate positions.
Whatever work experience you undertake, remember that you should keep a record of the tasks involved and the skills you have gained in order to build up your personal or professional development portfolio. If you do not already have a system within your university or would like to match this experience directly to a recognised competence framework you may wish to use the IET’s online professional development tool, Career Manager.
