A brief history of the Humber Local Network

Brief  History of the IET Humber Local Network

The North Lincolnshire District of the I.E.E. was inaugurated in 1957 at a meeting at the Berkeley Hotel, Scunthorpe. The North Midlands chairman A J Coveney and the Sheffield Sub-Centre chairman Dr. O I Butler were present. Mr H Peace was elected the North Lincolnshire District Convenor. A Committee was set up to run the North Lincolnshire District.

Initially the meetings were held at the Angel Hotel, Brigg, it being a convenient meeting place for members from Grimsby and Scunthorpe. During 1960 meetings began to be shared between Grimsby and Brigg until the closure of the Angel at Brigg when the venue was moved to the Wortley Hotel, Scunthorpe. On the formation of the Humberside County and the construction of the Humber Bridge discussions on a possible merger with Hull District took place. Members elected however to stay with the Sheffield District and retain the name of the North Lincolnshire District.

In the summer of 1983 on the Silver Jubilee of the North Lincolnshire District a celebration weekend visit to London by members and their partners took place. Savoy Place was specifically opened on the Sunday morning for the visit, which was followed by a visit to the Thames Barrier.

In March 2006, the IEE merged with the IIE to form the IET. At the same time, the North Lincolnshire Branch separated from the Sheffield branch to create a totally new local network called the Humber Network. This new Humber Local Network was given the task of serving all IET members on the both sides of the River Humber. A map showing the area covered by the IET Humber network can be seen on the About Us web page. The IET Humber network currently has a healthy of membership of 3500 and continues to work towards growing the activities and membership of our local network.

The ever popular annual dinner dance which was originally held at the Angel Hotel, Brigg, has now moved to the Forest Pines Hotel near Scunthorpe. It is now organised by the current chairman Paul Walker. Money is raised for the Benevolent Fund from this event.
