For the past fifty years, Rolls-Royce has been the Technical Authority for the UK Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP), which is responsible for powering the whole of the UK's Royal Navy submarine fleet.
Designing a reactor for a submarine brings about interesting challenges with the final solution enabling a unique capability for underwater vessels. However nuclear power at sea hasn't been used just for underwater vessels across the world's seas.
Looking to the future, as fossil fuels become scarce or expensive, perhaps we will see more commercial nuclear ships on our oceans.
