Shropshire Network Background Information

Background Information

The Shropshire Local Network IET has only been in existence since April 2006 following the merger of the IEE and IIE to form the IET. The Local Network and committee being formed from former Shropshire members of the IEE and IIE. At the time of forming it brought together around 450 IEE and 250 IIE members. The IET is an all inclusive institution encompassing electrical, electronic, production, mechanical and software engineers.

The Shropshire Branch was set up in October 2000, emerging as a result of the major root and branch review the IEE started in 1999. Prior to this it was known as the Shrewsbury Sub-Centre and was part of the North West Midland Centre area, which covers the Staffordshire and Stoke areas. The Sub-Centre was set up in 1992 to better cater for the needs of the 450 plus members who reside/work in the Shropshire and Mid Wales area, many of whom are remote from the North West Midland Centre. The Shropshire Branch area extends from Whitchurh in the North right down to Montgomery in the South, much of the area is rural but it does include the towns of Shrewsbury and Telford which have their share of electrical and engineering industries.

Due to the nature of the industries in the area we work closely with the Shropshire IMechE and arrange a varied programme of events which we endeavour to make of interest to all our members. These meetings are mostly held in Shrewsbury and Telford, but we are always willing to consider suggestions for alternative locations.

The Local Network booklet is produced annually in August which is followed up by emails and various fliers to keep members in touch. In the middle of 1998 the Branch (it was a Sub-Centre at the time) got together with other professional organisations in Shropshire to produce a Shropshire Profession Network (SPN) diary, this detailed events covering many organisations in Shropshire. Unfortunately this arrangement has ceased but it is hoped to recreate it on line as a calendar detailing all of Shropshire's professional events.
We welcome you to come and enjoy any or all these events in the company of your fellow professionals, there should be something for everyone to relish.
