About North West Midlands Network
Chairman's welcome
Welcome to the 2007/2008 IET calendar of events.
We’ve had an exciting past year and made new friends thanks to the merger of the IIE and the IEE, and the formation of a larger regional committee is giving us the opportunity to stage large events to a wider audience.
Some of the notable events from last year started with a slide presentation about the construction of an offshore windfarm, and our ‘Routes to Registration’ event enticed potential chartered engineers and gave me the chance to talk about my recent chartered status success. The executive director of the Energy Research Centre, John Loughead gave an amazing, informative and thought provoking presentation about the future of our energy, and our programme culminated in a celebration of science: a two day activity involving local schools themed ‘Engineering in Medicine’ followed by a (sometimes gory) excellent presentation on medical imaging.
A new addition this year was a report with photographs of one of our more intriguing events, a night-time tour through Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker, and this is on our website.
We have an excellent committee and are always welcoming to new committee members, so if you are interested in participating or volunteering to organise an event, let us know. Our meetings are at least once a month and usually involve a lecture followed by questions and refreshments and give us an opportunity to meet new people. Most events are free and are open to non IET members. Many of our events are held at Staffordshire University in a brand new comfortable lecture room, F14.
2008 promises to be an eventful year and I will be setting the theme with my ‘Walking with Robots’ lecture, an interactive demonstration of where robots are going, this will culminate with a two day event in July that will involve young engineers learning how to build their own robots. We also have an increasing number of site visits and presentations including television production, speech technology, alternative technology and bio energy.
Hope to see you there!
