The ear is a transducer converting sound pressure into vibration, then an electrical signal and nerve impulses. At the same time, it acts as a filter bank splitting the frequency spectrum into many different bands. The sharpness of these filters relies on an electro-mechanical amplification process which can result in instability and tinnitus. Deterioration of this process results in both loss of sensitivity and loss of analysing power. The former can be corrected by a hearing aid whilst the latter cannot.
