About this event
How does a 100m rotor on a hilltop cope with gale force winds and snowstorms? How can a turbine ever produce useful power when the wind stops, starts, and constantly shifts direction?
With the government's commitment to massive expansion of wind power in the UK, it is essential that Engineers have informed opinions on the technologies available. Wind turbines have progressed a long way from the iconic flour mills of old.
This talk will include information on the basic components of commercial wind turbines, their control philosophy and monitoring methods. It will describe some of the recent improvements in efficiency and also provide an insight into the shape of things to come. Particular focus will be given to the nearby Ffynnon Oer wind farm.
