Wales South West Professional Development

Professional Development (PD) is one of the cornerstones of our working lives. The IET recognises the importance of supporting its members through their careers, and has produced comprehensive advice, guidance and support to help members plan, undertake and review their professional development.

All engineers should seek to maintain their personal and professional competence through undertaking structured PD. The IET seeks to create an environment that encourages and enables members to remain professionally competent throughout their working lives through the provision of appropriate advice, guidance and support services. This approach is promoted by all institutions that belong to the PD Partnership (currently IET, IMechE, IIE, RAeS and Institute of Physics) and is appropriate to all membership of the Partnership Institutions. IET guidance on PD is non-prescriptive and promotes self-managed lifelong PD, whilst it is not mandatory it should be viewed as obligatory and individuals should be in a position to provide development action plans and documented evidence of their PD, if required. Adopting a structured approach and planning your development will ensure you;

  • Demonstrate your continuing commitment to your profession
  • Develop the good practice of regularly reviewing your needs and selecting relevant learning activities to help you fulfil them.

The IET expects its members to be able to demonstrate, if requested, their commitment to PD and continuing competence. Written evidence will be required at the Professional Review for chartered engineer. At other times members may be surveyed to establish whether the policies of the IET and the support services for PD are useful and effective.
