Session 1 - Low carbon networks have been discussed for some time, but what are they and why do we need them? Peter Aston will address these and other similar questions, by giving an insight into WPD’s programme of low carbon network projects, from academic research schemes through to multi-million pound demonstration projects.
Session 2 - With the uptake of new low carbon technologies, particularly on distribution networks, the challenges for operation and control on the current networks are increasing. A revolution is taking place in how electricity is generated and, soon, consumed and preparation is needed to prepare now for the impacts this will have on the energy infrastructure. David Kirkland will outline, from a technology companies perspective, the strategy and approach to meet and mitigate the upcoming challenges.
Session 3 - The smart metering programme is expected to deliver substantial benefits to the UK economy, with over 40 per cent of these directly attributable to consumers reducing their energy consumption. In this presentation Graeme Pauley and Dr Peter Morgan explain why ‘smart energy’ needs ‘smart consumers’ and suggest some of the ways in which this may be brought about.
