Is the Future Electric?

Presented by Prof. Neville S Jackson  Group Technology Director at Ricardo plc.

Synopsis

Concerns over climate change and energy security are driving an increased interest in Electric Vehicles (EVs) from Governments, car makers, suppliers, utilities & investors.   The growth of portable telephones and investments in hybrid electric vehicles has driven significant advances in battery technology, enabling a range of Electric Vehicles to be launched over the next few years.

However, consumers have very little understanding of the feasibility and implications of adopting EVs in lieu of cars with internal combustion engines.  The pathway to profit is unclear for many stakeholders and the electricity infrastructure  and component supply chain is not yet ready for large scale adoption of EVs.

This lecture provides an overview of the technical issues surrounding future battery options, vehicle characteristics and energy use.  It also addresses other market influences that may accelerate market introduction faster than technology advances may indicate.
