About Wales South East Network

Arshad Rasul, Chairman of Wales South East Network

Chairman's welcome

This will be my second year as chairman for the Wales South East Network. It is hard to believe that a year has gone by so quickly.

Last year the main theme was based on areas affecting the environment. We looked at the challenges for the Engineering community in providing solutions that were practical, effective and economically viable. This covered areas such as combined heat and power generation, woodchip burners, and next generation “urban friendly” wind turbines.

This year we are planning lectures on a diverse set of topics.

The much publicised “Digital Britain” report by Lord Carter aimed to highlight the technological and communications opportunities that will present themselves and the key directions that the UK should take in order to take advantage of them, primarily that of building out a high speed digital infrastructure in the UK available to all.

The need to keep the lights on and yet do this in a low carbon impact manner means we take a fresh look at nuclear power generation. Despite the reservations from the anti nuclear lobby, can we afford not to do it?

The way satellites are now an integral part of all our lives, prompts us to cast our eyes upwards to examine these marvels of technology that silently circle our globe, working (seemingly effortlessly) year after year, in more detail.

We are all painfully aware that since last year the global financial sector has gone through a collapse, the likes of which the world has never before seen. This has impacted on all areas of life, especially the engineering and manufacturing sectors. As engineers we will all need to help rebuild the UK economy back to the levels of prosperity that we have been fortunate to experience during the last decade.

I would like to pay tribute to the committees that work tirelessly to arrange all of these events, visits and lectures, keeping us updated, informed, and even entertained.

Please make the best use of these opportunities. .

I very much look forward to seeing you all at the events over the coming year.

Arshad Rasul C.Eng. F.I.E.T.

Chairman
Wales-South East Local Network. 2009 - 2010

About the Wales South East Network

There are two IET Regions in Wales, the North Wales Region and the South Wales Region. In the South Wales Region there are two Local Networks, the Wales South West Local Network (centred around the Swansea area) and the Wales South East Local Network (centred around the Cardiff area).

Within the Wales South East Local Network there are four operating committees.

Each of the four committees of volunteer members arrange a programme of some three to six events per year. The Local Network events are of a general technical nature, the Technical Network events are more specific to their specialties and the Younger Member's programme includes events such as life skills seminars, IET introduction to new students, getting chartered, web casts and technical visits etc.

Both IET members and non-members are welcome to attend these events. However, it is strongly advised that anyone wishing to attend an event informs the organiser or contact for the event of their intention at least one week in advance of the event. This gives the organiser the opportunity to ensure there is sufficient accommodation and refreshments.

In addition to the above four committees there is also the Electronics and Communications Technical Network which is administered by the Wales South West Network and arranges events in both the Swansea area and the Cardiff area

Did you know?

To receive notifications by post and email of events and activities in other Local Networks you can become an 'Honorary Member' of that Network?

This can be done online by logging into 'MyIET' on the IET web-site and visiting the 'My Networks' area in MyIET Extra. Simply select the Networks you are interested in from the drop down menu and click 'add'. You can remove your 'Honorary Membership' of a Network in the same way.
