Nuclear fusion, the process that powers the Sun, can play a big part in our carbon-free energy future. Research into controlled fusion, with the aim of producing fusion power for the production of electricity, has been conducted for over 60 years. It has been accompanied by extreme scientific and technological difficulties, but has resulted in progress. At present, controlled fusion reactions have been unable to produce break-even (self-sustaining) controlled fusion reactions
The visit to Culham, one of the world's leading fusion research laboratories, will allow you to tour the JET and MAST fusion experiments and speak to physicists and engineers working on the projects.
We would like to make you aware that there will be a significant amount of walking during the evening so it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes. Please also note that open-toe shoes are strictly forbidden in one of the experimental areas, so please ensure ALL visitors wear covered footwear.
Although, we have no restrictions on children attending the Culham Open Evenings, the talk and tours are quite technical and we suggest that the level of understanding is more suitable for those aged from 14 years upwards.
Please note that photography is permitted throughout the tours.
18.15 Arrival - tea and coffee will be served
