Development of Code Breaking at Bletchley Park during World War II
Technological developments were key in helping to break the German Enigma and Lorenz ciphers during WW2. An electromechanical machine called the Bombe was designed by the mathematician Alan Turing to find the settings to enable the Enigma cipher to be read. Later the world’s first programmable digital electronic computer called Colossus, built by Tommy Flowers under the guidance of Max Newman, was used to speed up breaking the Lorenz cipher from days to hours, vitally in time for D-Day. This talk will cover these developments as they took place at Bletchley Park during WW2
