Membership advisors in IET branches are senior members of the Institution, frequently with experience on the membership committees who act in an honorary capacity to advise candidates on membership problems. While they will usually be prepared to see candidates by appointment, it is preferable that the first approach should be by the candidate drafting an application form as far as possible and sending it to the membership advisor for comment. The advisor will then be able to suggest modifications to the presentation and to arrange a meeting if considered desirable. It is emphasised that a badly presented case may, in exceptional circumstances, adversely affect the result of an application.
