Room 2Q49, Frenchay Campus, University of the West of England, Coldharbour Lane, Bristol BS16 1QY
OC Robotics is a provider of Snake-arm robots; wire-driven self-supporting manipulators for remote operations in hazardous and confined spaces. Operation is simple: the operator flies the tip and the body "nose-follows" the path created by the tip. The exceptional ability of snake-arm robots to manoeuvre into otherwise inaccessible spaces makes them valuable in a large number of applications in high-value industrial markets. OC Robotics has delivered robots and has provided consultancy and analysis for wide-ranging industries including nuclear, aerospace and security. In addition to its commercial success, OC Robotics has won several awards including the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2009.
This talk will cover technical details about Snake-arm robots and the past, present and future applications of Snake-arm manipulators.

Rob Buckingham completed first and second degrees on the Special Engineering Programme at Brunel University before his PhD at the University of Bristol. He took up a lectureship in Mechanical Engineering and led a research team investigating the application of robots in the food, textiles and medical sectors. In 1997 he co-founded OC Robotics in 1997 to "make money out of robots". With co-founder Andrew Graham, Rob has focused on developing snake-arm robots that are specifically designed to operate in confined spaces. In 2009, Rob was awarded the RAEng Silver Medal. He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IET.
