SaRS: Breaking the Chain – Lessons learned from the Concorde accident
Speaker: John Britton, retired Concorde Chief Engineer
John Britton joined British Aircraft Corporation, Filton in 1963 as a Technician Apprentice. He attended the BAC Technical College, and later Bristol Polytechnic where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. His career covered 41 years in the Design Office where he worked on over 23 aircraft types, mainly in Fluid and Mechanical Systems Design. For the last 10 years of his career he was Chief Engineer with responsibility for the Continued Airworthiness of the In-Service Concorde and BAC 1-11 fleets. He retired in 2004 after Concorde was withdrawn from service.

Breaking the Chain
The talk gives the story of the Air France Concorde crash at Le Bourget in 2000, the investigation carried out by the French and British Accident Investigators, and the modifications carried out by the Manufacturers to return the aircraft to service. It includes a simulation of the fatal flight, taken from the accident recorder, plus video footage of the numerous tests carried out to obtain re-certification.
