Local Schools and Colleges

The importance of building contacts with Schools, Colleges and Universities in Sussex is recognised by the network and we hope to improve our performance in this area over the next year. We already have contacts with the following establishments:

  • University of Brighton
  • Sussex University
  • Central Sussex College
  • SETPOINT - Sussex,  representing schools

Many University and College courses are approved by the Institution.

Please contact webmaster.sussex@theiet.org if you would like your educational establishment to appear in this list or otherwise want to make contact with the network at a local level.

We welcome enquiries from any sort of body involved with education located in the county

IET Discovery South East Coco Project

The IET Discovery South East Coco project aims to increase dwindling numbers in engineering by introducing control fundamentals to the younger ages.  Coco is control based software and hardware designed especially for children, providing a creative and fun platform to produce engineering solutions to real world problems.  Examples of activities include programming beebots, controlling traffic lights/pedestrian crossings, audio and vision for simulated rock concerts, train barriers and home based controls.

The IET YM section, together with STEM Sussex (formerly SETPOINT Sussex), have played an important role in obtaining funding, establishing activities, assisting training, as well as delivery at schools.  Since the first day based events in March, over 1000 children have used the kit (surpassing our yearly target of 600) and demand is growing.

The IET YM has been able to assist with school activities through involvement in the Science and Engineering Ambassadors (SEAs) program.  We are keen for more volunteers to participate.  Becoming a SEA can also strongly assist with obtaining chartered engineer status.

Other Programmes:

IET Sussex has also been involved in developing other STEM programmes for schools and colleges including:

  • Technology in Sport
  • Music Technology
  • Green Energy Project

These are all delivered through the SEA programme (see below). If you are interested in getting involved with one of these projects then please get in touch – email the secretary in the first instance (see contacts page).

Science & Engineering Ambassadors (SEAs)

The SEAs’ programme enables people with science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) skills to support teachers in schools, by enhancing and enriching the relevant parts of the curriculum"

Becoming a SEA is easy and involves registering online, completing an application form and attending a short induction session (held by STEM Sussex).  When a SEA, the minimum requirement is to support one event per year (not a big commitment).

If you are interested in the IET Discovery South East Project and becoming a SEA, then please email Bronagh Liddicoat (stemsussex@brighton.ac.uk) with your address to receive your information pack and forms.  The address will be kept confidential.  You will then hear about an evening SEAs’ induction session at Brighton University or, if there are several of you, at your place of work at lunch time.

Thanks for your support.
