About Sussex Network

Firstly, many thanks for visiting the IET Sussex Local Network web pages. We are a group of active members (volunteers) of the IET who organise relevant activities and events in the local area. Our main areas are as follows:

  • Delivery of events programme: we organise lectures, seminars and other events throughout the year. There are a variety of events each with a different focus including technical lectures, CPD events and careers events. See the events page for more details. This is also re-produced in a programme booklet sent out to members prior to the start of the events season.
  • Schools Liaison and Science and Engineering Ambassadors: we are proud to have a very active and enthusiastic schools liaison officer who works with STEM Sussex (www.stemsussex.co.uk) to deliver events to schools and colleges in the area. The aim of this programme is to promote careers in STEM and increase awareness of how STEM affect our every day lives. Several committee members are Science and Engineering Ambassadors (SEA’s) who assist in delivering events in schools and we have also developed several successful events of our own which are currently being delivered.
  • Young Professionals: We have a very active YP section who organise events focussed on students and graduates. These include social, recruitment and career development events. See the YP and events pages for more information.
  • Benevolent fund: we have a committee member who manages local benevolent fund duties and provides support to members and their relatives where required. See http://www.ietconnect.org/ for more information.
  • Interaction with local Businesses: We work closely with the regional development manager for the area to try to build links to local business partners. If your business would like to become involved with the IET Sussex LN then please get in touch to see what we can offer you!
  • Interaction with local Universities: We maintain regular contact with the Universities in our area and offer talks including recruitment events and careers events. We actively encourage students to become involved with the local YP committee – if you’re interested then get in touch via the contacts page!
  • Mentoring: We also have a local mentoring co-ordinator who can arrange a suitable mentor for the purposes of professional development.

We also have strong links with other organisations within our area including the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Retired Chartered Engineers Association (Sussex - http://www.rceasussex.org.uk/).

Get involved

We are always looking for more people to get involved with the IET in Sussex. There are three main ways in which you can do this:

  • Become a member of the main committee or young professionals committee
  • Become a science and engineering ambassador to promote STEM activities in schools and colleges
  • Assist with our events programme by either organising or delivering a talk/lecture/demonstration

If you would like to be involved then please contact our secretary in the first instance via the contacts page.

Email from the IET

As well as the programme booklet the IET can inform you of our events by email.  In fact this is the only way we can inform you of short notice events.

But are you receiving emails from the IET informing you of our events?  If not please click on the ‘MyIET’ button at the top of the page and log in.  By going into the ‘My Communications’ area on the left hand side of the screen you can tick the ‘Contact me by email’ button which will include you in our email list.

Assuming you tick none of the other boxes, you will receive about two emails a month, which will give you up-to-date information on our local network events and will let you know if anything changes.  If you have any difficulties with doing this please contact our Local Network Co-ordinator Julie Hudson at jhudson@theiet.org or by calling 01438 767285 as Julie can make the changes for you.
