In the past decade the need for coordinated world wide action to reduce carbon emissions has been demonstrated as being of critical importance to the future of the planet. In response the UK has acted as part of a wider global team to commit to reducing carbon emissions to certain targets as part of binding international agreements. Within the UK buildings account for almost 50% of all carbon emissions, so it follows that as the Government steps up its response to climate change so the legislation relating to buildings continues to grow, putting greater demands on property developers and building designers to deliver even better sustainable buildings and developments – together with more accountability.

This lecture will address the following three topics:

Legislation for Change -- The European Energy directive which became mandatory in April 2006, is changing the way buildings are designed and constructed. Details of this directive will be presented.

Environmental Profiling -- This topic addresses the environmental impact of buildings and how careful planning and design of buildings can help to reduce the carbon footprint. Methods of measuring sustainability will be presented, including the use of bespoke environmental profiling to help synergise buildings with their natural environments.

Enhanced Sustainability Measures -- This topic will review the various emerging low carbon technologies and how they can help deliver a low to zero carbon footprint development/building. Case studies will be used to demonstrate how systems such as bio-fuels, ground coupled technologies and anaerobic digestion can help engineers deliver low/zero carbon buildings.
