He even attempts to demonstrate the shocking facts live before your very eyes! With electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to electronic components and fires caused by ESD in industrial processes, static shocks suffered by people in many modern environments, and use of static electricity in various applications, he shows how electrostatics is a very relevant subject in modern life.

Biography
After achieving a BSc in Electronics and following a first career in electronic design, Dr Jeremy Smallwood rejoined Southampton University and achieved a PhD in electrostatic discharge ignition of sensitive pyrotechnic materials. He has worked as an electrostatics consultant since 1987. In 1998 he started his own consultancy business Electrostatic Solutions Ltd providing research, advisory and training services in electrostatic discharge (ESD) avoidance in electronics industry, avoidance of process fires and explosions, and development of new technologies. He has several publications in these fields. Jeremy also works in electrostatics related standards and is a member of the BSI panels GEL101 (Handling of electrostatic sensitive devices) and GEL 601 (Control of undesirable static electricity). He is currently Chairman of the International Electrotechnical Committee TC101 Electrostatics, the international committee responsible for drafting electrostatics standards worldwide.
