Dr. Ciarán Beggan, geophysicist at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, explains the mechanisms by which the magnetic fields of the Sun and Earth interact and how currents are generated which flow into the power network. Other impacts include interference with GPS and satellite systems with implications for timing and navigation services.

As well as light and heat, the Sun and the Earth are linked by their magnetic fields. Occasional large eruptions on the Sun's surface - known as coronal mass ejections - release powerful magnetic fields which can interact with the Earth and cause damage to the electrical power grids, particularly at high latitudes such as the UK. How is this possible and how can we identify and prevent potential damage to infrastructure?
Free event, snacks and drinks will be provided.
