Dr Iain Murray, Lecturer in Applied Computing, University of Dundee
The AGMs will be followed at 7:30pm by a lecture entitled - Sir Barnes Wallis: An Engineer 50 Years Ahead of his Time.
Most famous for inventing the Dambusters' `bouncing bomb` and the geodetic structure of the Wellington bomber, Barnes Wallis's career stretched from naval architecture through airships, aircraft and bombs to supersonic aircraft including those with variable geometry `swing wings`. At every turn, his ideas offered remarkable departures from conventional practice, and even today some of his ideas still look futuristic.
After his secondary education in Dunfermline, Dr Iain Murray went to the University of Dundee in 1982 where he gained an undergraduate degree in electronics and a postgraduate research degree on the subject of speech synthesis. He has been a lecturer in the School of Computing there since 1991, still with an interest in speech synthesis and communication technology. He has been a Member of the IET since 2001.
He is the Chairman of the Tayside & Fife Branch of the British Science Association, and a member of the organisation’s national Council. The Branch organises an annual programme of public events, including a science lecture series.
He has been interested in the work of Sir Barnes Wallis for many years, and has researched the detail of Wallis’s work for over 6 years. His first book, which is on this subject, is available now and another on the technical aspects of the Dambusters is in press (expected 2011).
