The marine energy industry is in the ascendancy with many new projects being developed in Scotland and around the UK. This talk will look back at the development of wave and tidal energy and will illustrate the current state-of-the-art in the industry.

Ian Bryden is Professor of Renewable Energy within the School of Engineering and Electronics at the University of Edinburgh. He was appointed in January 2006 following almost ten years at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, where he was Dean of Postgraduate Studies. At Edinburgh he leads the Marine Energy and Coastal Defence research group and is Research Director of the EPSRC Supergen Marine Energy Consortium and a non executive director of the European Marine Energy Centre. His research interests include tidal energy extraction and he was responsible for the Sea Snail, a novel removable mooring system for tidal energy systems. He is a member of the Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Marine Engineers and Scientists and the Institute of Physics.
