About Lancashire and Cumbria Network

Chairman's welcome

Welcome to another season of the IET Lancashire and Cumbria Network’s presentations and events.

Having spent 34 years in the power generation industry, the privatisation meant the split up of the industry and many redundancies due to what the City perceived as over staffing.  Starting at coal-fired power stations in the Midlands, I then moved up to an oil fired power station in Scotland and then back down to Cheshire. After only a year at Ince B, I was moved up to Heysham to be involved in commissioning what was called Stage 1.  After 8 years there I was moved across to Stage 2 and spent 7 years there.  When the privatisation split came any one over 50 was offered severance.  Having another 12 years to fill before the state pension would come in I needed to do something else in the meantime.

That something came via an old acquaintance of my wife, who had kept in touch over many years. I was invited to get involved with various electric bus projects.  The prospect of making something tangible rather than just the invisible ‘juice’ was very appealing.

These projects took me all over Europe, America and eventually Hong Kong; the latter being the subject of my chairman’s talk.

Having worked in a very cloistered industry most of my life, it was very refreshing to see how the other half lived.

I hope this and other talks we have arranged for the coming season will open a few more windows on our fascinating engineering world and cater for most interests.
