Hello and welcome to your IET in the East Midlands Region.
Once again, may I welcome all members to our Institution, existing or new, as participants in one of the world's most professional, innovative and inclusive institutions in the field of engineering and technology. The past twelve months have seen a great deal of changes with the global recession. Many companies and organisations have fallen victim to the credit crunch, with only a few under the media spotlight. The rest are being subjected to, working issues, dilemmas and an environment that management have little or no prior experience in dealing with.
It has also been said that our reliance on services means we do not create any value as a nation. As engineers I feel we are one of the few professions that bucks this trend! Through innovations in research, technology and design, continuous improvement by eliminating waste, adding real value and make business decisions based on data not speculation, I do believe, that as a community of people, we can be an active part of the worlds recovery.
A great number of changes have also occurred internally within the IET. These changes will hopefully enable more energy and effort being channeled on the things we all want as members; services to improve "the sharing and advancement of knowledge in the Science, Engineering and Technology community to enhance people's lives". Also there is an active shift towards making early and mid career engineers better represented.
Last year I mentioned that this was all to serve you, our members in industry, business, universities, schools and those whose careers may have just begun all the way through to those who have retired. This is still true.
This years' programme of events aims to build on the success of last year, but also strengthens our ties with neighbouring IET networks, other professional institutions, and also the IET's technical and professional networks (TPN) around the World. What Younger Professionals need and want will remain the focus of our activities and it is pleasing to see their numbers grow in our network.
The IET is a member volunteers' organisation. My team only exist for the benefit of members and it is important that we engage with as many of you as possible. If you feel there is something we can do better, please tell us and certainly if you wish to have more say in how the institution is run, do get involved. Remember that the IET is your institution,
So finally, welcome again to your IET in 2009/2010 and I hope to meet many of you at our events around the region.
