Peterborough and Huntingdon Media and PR Officer
Message from Media and Public Relations Officer
A very warm welcome and thank you for visiting the IET Peterborough and Huntingdon Local Network’s web-site.
Since the formation of this Network almost two years ago, I joined the committee to develop knowledge and skills pertaining to my interest in the engineering and technology profession by maintaining contact with professionals in Peterborough. My role within the committee is to learn and experience the general management of our local network, and to support members locally, helping with the needs of the local engineering and technology community in general.
Over the past two years, the local network has developed and excelled with the hard work of all committee members and the fantastic leadership of our past Chairman Fred Davis.
The commitment of supporting the local network is on a voluntary basis and everyone within the committee has given their warm - hearted support, and time, to ensure the local network operates flawlessly. There have been many challenges but through teamwork the outcomes have been positive.
In meeting these challenges, I have enjoyed supporting the network by: putting forward ideas which ensure we meet the needs of our members, and to be able to support our local community. Much work was needed to develop our local network, and I have gained experience, knowledge and aspirations to further develop my skills. I was honoured, by the local committee members, who elected me as Media and Public Relations Officer, Student Counsellor/advisor, Events Coordinator and Webmaster.
My aim is to actively participate in maximising the publicity and support for the local network, the IET, its members and the engineering profession. In conjunction with the work of the Peterborough Joint Panel (PJP) and the P&H Local Network, we are and will be committed to increasing and raising awareness of the benefits of not only joining the IET, but also the ‘Business Partners’ initiative which encompasses further and higher education establishments and institutions, in helping support local academic centres in meeting the needs of their learners.
To raise awareness of the IET, the local network has for the first time, sponsored awards for ‘student excellence’ to those learners who have excelled in their studies beyond distinction. In recognition of such achievements, one student from Peterborough Regional College was awarded the Student Excellence Award for his studies in HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the College, presented at the recent graduation ceremony. A further award will be presented to a similar student of Huntingdon Regional College.

Moshin Dharas (IET P&H Media, PR and Student Counsellor/Advisor and events coordinator).
David Morris (IET P&H local Network Award for Student Excellence award for achieving - HNC in Electrical & Electronic engineering at Peterborough Regional College with outstanding grades).
Fred Davis (IET P&H Local network Past - Chairman)
Mick Ross (IET P&H Local network – Honorary Treasurer)
The ‘Local Network Student Excellence’ prize includes a Certificate, £250 and a trophy.
The IET is not only about joining and maintaining membership, it also helps and supports the local community and inspires non- members to have a better understanding of what the IET offer and the profession of engineering and technology in general. The IET awards also support those achievers, so that they are able to excel in their career and employment.
Finally, with the new IET Peterborough and Huntingdon local network web site established, I shall be managing this area.
As ‘web-master, events and PR’ – I look forward to supporting your needs. Therefore this web area will contain information of events, issues, press release on local engineering and technology related matters.
The aim is to increase public awareness of local IET meetings and lectures via local press and radio. The events are listed in the 2007/2008 GPPBG diary. An electronic version of the diary is available by navigating to the link: ‘GPPBG diary showing events of all institutions in Peterborough and Huntingdon for 2007/08’
Following my recent application with the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), I have been able to secure an area of web-site on the ‘Eastspace’ system. I would therefore like to thank EEDA for sponsoring our IET Peterborough and Huntingdon Local Network who have supported our campaign to increase awareness in the local community on activities and events. Should you wish to place any news or information in this area, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Finally, this year marks 50 years of space exploration. There have been many global challenges in exploration and research in this field. In the GPPBG diary you will see a variety of events ranging from space exploration to visiting the Jodrell Bank observatory in Cheshire. At local network level, we have evaluated IET members’ interests and found they desire to gain knowledge through visits and events/lectures presented by professional people.
One event we have organized is our prestige lecture to be given by Professor Colin Pillinger, which we hope will interest everyone in this work on space exploration. Please email me in advance for seat reservations. The lecture is free and all are welcome.
In the meantime, ‘thank you’ to everyone for your support and help at the beginning of another challenging year. I look forward to helping our local IET network to meet the needs of our local Engineering and Technology community in identifying opportunities for collaboration with other organisations.
Best wishes.
Kind regards,
Moshin. R. Dharas
