Peterborough and Huntingdon Chairmans welcome
Message from our Chairman
The past has seen the Peterborough and Huntingdon Local Network establish itself as an active and successful network within the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the largest institution of its kind headquartered in Europe and one of the leading engineering institutions in the World. The initial success of the Peterborough and Huntingdon local network has been due in no small part to the hard work and inspiration of our retiring chairman, Fred Davis. Without Fred’s leadership, the network simply would not exist and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him on behalf all members of the network. Although he is stepping down as our chairman, Fred will still be very active within the institution at regional and national level and I am sure he will continue to support local network events as he has in the past.
The next year will be one of consolidation as your committee works to build on the firm foundations that have been laid in 2006/2007. We have organised a full programme of events, including one prestige lecture by Professor Colin Pillinger of the Open University on Mars landers and Space exploration. Professor Pillinger is one of the world’s leading authorities on space exploration and his lecture promises to be not only informative but also very entertaining. I hope you will all come along and enjoy listening to one of the World’s great planetary scientists.
By now, all members should have received the 2007/2008 edition of the Greater Peterborough Professional Bodies Group diary listing a full programme of events that does, I believe, offer something to suit all interests within the fields of engineering and technology. A copy of the GPPBG Diary’s events may be found below. If the programme meets your aspirations, please tell your friends and associates and encourage them to come along and play an active part in the local network. If the programme does not meet your approval, please tell us what sort of events you would like to see in your diary. The committee’s job is to organise a programme of events that satisfies our members’ needs and interests and will listen and respond to you views if you tell us what they are. You can find contact details by navigating and to the top of this page and selecting ‘Committee’.
Fred Davis (IET P&H Local network Past - Chairman)
David Morris (IET P&H local Network Award for Student Excellence award for achieving - HNC in Electrical & Electronic engineering at Peterborough Regional College with outstanding grades)
Two of my key personal interests are encouraging young people to consider engineering as a career and encouraging the development of young engineers. I am therefore, delighted that Dawn Fitt, President of the Women’s Engineering Society has agreed to join our local network as Schools Liaison Officer for 2007/2008. The local network has, for the first time, sponsored awards for excellence for engineering students at Peterborough Regional College and Huntingdon Regional College. I look forward to working with the Young Engineers Section who have a very enthusiastic and active committee and, of course, the Huntingdon section, of which I am also honoured to be chairman.
I would like to see a local section established in the Kings Lynn area. We know that several our members live in the or near Kings Lynn, which is remote from the geographic centre of the Peterborough network; if any of you would like to organise a local network event in your area, please let us know and we will support you organisationally and financially.
The 2007/2008 session promises to be an exciting and interesting period in the development of the Peterborough and Huntingdon local network; please come along and be part of it. You will find contact details for all committee members in the GPPBG diary.
Yours sincerely,
Alan Scott
